How to Commission an Original Work of Art: My Commission Process
I don't hear people talk much about the art commission process and I think it can feel a little intimidating if you've never had a custom art piece made before. But it doesn't have to!
Let's pull back the fancy art world curtain for a sec…
Most artists who do commissions (which many do!) have a similar process for it - mine is outlined below.
Others are more selective and have a more formal process, sometimes including an online form or reservation. And some artists will take on a commission project only through the galleries that represent them, so it’s best to contact the gallery directly.
Here is my simple commission process:
Email me with a bit about your space and what you're looking for - feel free to send photos or mood boards!
I'll share my ideas, rough mockups, pricing and timeline.
With your feedback, I'll create final mockups of artwork for your approval.
Art making begins! I always share photos and updates along the way.
You'll receive final photos and then the art will be shipped straight to you.
Some things to keep in mind:
To simplify the process and keep all work aligned with my style, I have a curated selection of compositions I always share as a jumping off point. You can choose one of these or let me know if there's something else you have in mind!
A 50% deposit is due before art making begins. Final payment is due once artwork is complete.
I hope this has been a painless, art-world-intimidation-less crash course on commissions!
