Spearmint Cream Stripes (Mexican Blanket)

225.00

Spearmint Cream Stripes (Mexican Blanket), 12 x 12 in
Thread and brass tacks on canvas. Signed on reverse.
Painting is tacked to wood brace, which hangs directly on wall. Canvas is a fluid material that moves and shifts. Any curving or waving of the canvas is part of the movement of this piece.

The Mexican Blanket collection is, in part, a continuation of my Color Block series. One central paint color is accented by embroidered elements stitched in complementary and contrasting colors that play off of each other and the painted background, bouncing light and color to the eye. In other pieces, embroidery is used alone to create graphic patterns as a kind of modern folk art.

Inspired by a pure love of vibrant color and a growing obsession with Mexican art and design. Named for the 1970s family heirloom that keeps me cozy in my studio.

Unstretched, unprimed canvas is a physical element of each piece, rather than just a support, making these works both painting on canvas and embroidery on fabric, blending fine art with folk art.
